We normally work with disks which are accessible but which may have corrupt filesystems or bad sectors. We can however handle the recovery of data if a drive is none functional (the recovery process is more problematic here and can be substantially more expensive).
In extreme cases we will look at the disk as a single image and look for residual data as specified by the customer. Fragments of residual data of this form may remain on computers days, months or years after deletion even if reformatting has been done.
